Google's Town Hall Meeting

At the June 17th St. David’s Town Hall, Google presented its plans to enhance Bermuda’s digital infrastructure through the deployment of the Nuvem subsea cable system. This initiative supports the growing global demand for data-intensive services like artificial intelligence and machine learning, which require fast, secure, and resilient connectivity. Subsea fiber-optic cables are essential to delivering this performance, enabling data to be stored closer to users and synchronized across global networks. Google emphasized that investing in this infrastructure is a core part of maintaining a truly global digital platform.

Why Bermuda? It has a regulatory framework.

The presentation outlined the direct benefits to Bermuda, including increased internet capacity, improved resiliency, and support for the island’s digital economy. A purpose-built cable landing station will be constructed with community-conscious features such as soundproofing, downward-directed lighting, and a backup generator used only for emergencies or maintenance. The project timeline spans from initial surveys in 2023 to full system readiness in 2027, with key milestones including cable installations between Bermuda, the U.S., and the Azores, and the completion of local construction. Google’s wholesale model will empower local ISPs with access to its global network, ensuring long-term connectivity and economic opportunity for Bermuda.
